In April 2020, Iberdrola [1] started up the Núñez de Balboa photovoltaic plant built in the municipality of Usagre in Badajoz. The plant, with 500 MWp of nominal power, has become the largest photovoltaic plant built in Europe to date.
The plant, which covers an area of approximately 1 000 hectares, consists of 1 430 000 solar panels that feed 115 inverters and are connected to two substations. The annual production is 832 GWh, enough to supply the needs of about 250 000 people a year, avoiding the emission of more than 215 000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. The budget of EUR 290 million has been financed by the Spanish Official Credit Institute (ICO [2]) and the European Investment Bank (EIB [3]).
Barlovento Recursos Naturales through its subsidiary energy to Quality (e2Q) has collaborated carrying out different electrical studies of power quality and grid connection.
